Will a Living Will Give You Peace of Mind?

Living WillIf a loved one is on the brink of death and is not able to communicate his wishes, a living will is a useful document to have. It lays out one’s instructions for health procedures, indicating whether he wants to have them or not. It also specifies the person’s decisions regarding end-of-life situations.

The Care They Want

A healthy person may already start thinking about what to write on his document. It is not easy to imagine one being subject to hospice care. While it may even seem morbid to some, it helps people choose the care they want when they are already incapable of speaking and making that decision. Medical practices advise individuals of all ages to include the following in their living will:

  • Instructions regarding the use of feeding tubes.
  • Whether or not the person wants to prolong his life with resuscitation and life support.
  • Instructions regarding organ donation.
A Person They Trust

The living will also lets the person appoint someone they trust to make sure their requests are carried out. A healthcare proxy is the middleman between the sick and the doctor. He has the right to request and reject treatment on behalf of the patient.

A Durable Power of Attorney

The sick can still oversee his affairs with the Durable Power of Attorney. This allows him to appoint people to make bank transactions, pay bills and sign checks in his place. The DPOA lets the individual and his family avoid confusion. This also assures him that should anything happen, there are trustworthy people who will make decisions and act for him.

A Piece of Peace

A living will is not a guarantee that everything will work out according to one’s requests. At the very least, it lets his family, friends and doctors know what he wants. For that reason, it is a piece of peace for the individual.
