Prenuptial Agreements: Do They Predict Divorce?

PrenupWhen you’re marrying the man/woman of your dreams, you might find it utterly stupid to sign a prenuptial agreement. Well, there are valid reasons for thinking so. People, for the most part, believe that signing a pre-nup automatically equates to setting up a marriage for failure.

In fact, an article from the New York Times titled, If You Want a Prenup, You Don’t Want Marriage notes that signing one increases the risk of ending up unhappy and divorced. It also suggests that your chance of finding wedded bliss will be much higher if you don’t sign one.

Those who favor practicality, however, will argue that a prenuptial agreement is a wise way to enter a marriage. It can serve as a backup, giving you a greater sense of security in case the unfortunate happens. An article from the Harvard University Gazette agrees with this idea, noting that a good agreement can exert positive force on a healthy marriage. It further notes that such agreements make marriages more stable. One reason couples don’t sign prenuptial agreements because it signals uncertainty in a marriage. People can become pessimistic about the success of their marriage when they have a prenuptial agreement.

In the Event of Divorce

A report from the US News & World Report features a survey revealing that 15% of divorced Americans regret not having a pre-nup. This is why some couples are considering seeking protection in case the marriage ends. It can save divorcing couples, arguments, anguish, and thousands or even millions of money.
