Not All Doctors are Created Equal

Not All Doctors are Created EqualIt’s true, medical doctors seem to be getting the better university education more than everyone else. Nonetheless, medical negligence has become a constant reality in American society over the years. As lawyers try to put their hand into it, their need for expertise that understands the diverse world of both the medical and the legal, heightens.

An Alarming Concern

It may not raise eyebrows for many, says The Center for Legal Studies, but a quick look at the facts should be enough to scare any American citizen.

JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) discloses medical negligence as the third leading cause of death in the U.S.— outscored only by heart disease and cancer. So rampant are these cases, over $3 billion was spent as medical malpractice payouts in 2012 alone.

This translates to over 400,000 deaths in the U.S. on a yearly basis. And although a slew of these cases seek to put medical doctors liable, some involve other health-care providers and big pharmaceutical companies.

Sadly, the majority of these medical malpractice cases end with not a single dollar paid to the injured patient or the family of a deceased loved one.

Navigating a Foreign Territory

To be effective in such legal proceedings, however, a lawyer must acquaint himself as best he can with the technicalities of the medical world.

To fill such a great need, a lawyer must seek the help of medical experts. It is here that a certified legal nurse consultant comes in handy. As a legal consultant, a nurse can provide the needed medical input to allow a lawyer to weigh in on the case.

For instance, a legal nurse could educate an attorney on the salient features of a plaintiff’s medical records.

On the other hand, a legal nurse must also acquaint himself with legalities to properly advise the lawyer. Though every state may vary in their requirements, a nurse must undergo training and certification to this effect – to faithfully deliver his duties as a certified legal nurse consultant.

With such a medico-legal expert on the job, separating the good doctors from the not-so-good ones is a cinch.
