For Newlyweds: Adjustments to Make as a Married Couple

Imagine that you and your partner have already tied the knot and arrived back from your honeymoon. You’ve also already obtained your marriage certificate and consulted a firm in Utah like Buhler Thomas Law, P.C. for your Green Card. Things are finally starting to settle down. As they do, however, both of you should shift your focus toward adjusting to life as a married couple.

Time

Although you’ve probably been spending most of your time together, you may still need to make some adjustments now that you’re married. Remember that you’re officially members of each other’s families, so talk about how much time you’ll be spending with your respective families. Conversely, both of you should still have some time to spend alone or with other people so as not to lose your individuality.

Money

Another adjustment that you have to make involves money. Both of you are most likely used to handling your own money, but this will have to change as you now share most everything. Discuss how you’ll divide expenses and how much you’ll spend and save each month. Additionally, to manage your finances better, consider opening a joint bank account. That said, it’s a good idea to maintain your accounts so that both of you can still be financially independent.

Space

Finally, you’ll have some adjustments to make when it comes to space. This is especially important if it’s the first time you’ll be sharing living space together. Dirty clothes scattered on the floor or pizza crumbs on the bed may seem inconsequential but may become a source of conflict between you two over time. Set some house rules, but if you’d rather not, always be considerate of each other.
