Tips to Avoid DivorceMarriages are not like fairy tales where you are sure of a happily ever after with your partner. Unfortunately, some couples end filing a divorce. But should marriages really have to end that way?

More than 2 million couples get married each year. That’s quite an impressive figure. However, about 40 to 50 percent of marriages end in divorce court, and the reason is not just limited to one according to divorceattorneyinlongisland.com and other divorce lawyers Suffolk County, NY.

Common Reasons behind Divorce

Infidelity is the leading cause of divorce as reported by the AARP. However, there is usually an underlying cause as to why a spouse cheats based on the same report. It could be anger, jealousy, or unequal sexual appetites, just to name a few.

Any form of abuse – physical, emotional, or verbal – is also another reason why couples end in divorce. According to Simple Divorce Advice, being in an abusive relationship is both not healthy and not safe.

Other common reasons for divorce involve addiction, incompatibility, money, and lack of commitment.

It may sound funny, but a survey conducted by Men’s Health showed that some marriages also end in divorce court because of weight gain. What happened to “forever after” then?

Tips to Save a Marriage

Don’t wait until it’s too late. You can do some things to save your marriage.

1. Remain faithful.

It is perhaps one of the best ways to prove your love for your partner. Furthermore, infidelity will only ignite misunderstanding, which could even provoke your spouse to do the same thing or become abusive.

2. Spend time with each other.

Do things together at least once a week. You do not necessarily have to like your partner’s cherished hobbies, but try to do things you are both interested in together.

3. Make your partner your friend.

Talk and laugh with your spouse. Comfort and support him/her when needed. Show affection and get to know your spouse intimately.

4. Express your love both in action and in words.

If you care for and respect your partner, there should be no reason why this would difficult.

It takes effort from both partners for a relationship to grow and last. Divorce is not always the answer. You can seek counseling and work harder to save it.
