A Guide to Becoming a Legal Nurse Consultant

Legal Nurse Consultant When it comes to nursing, the common image that comes into a lot of people’s mind is that of white-clad hospital workers making rounds and attending to patients’ needs. However, work in the field is actually diverse and there are positions that could give you a good career opportunity. One of such is being a legal nurse consultant. In this short guide, you will learn what the work is all about, as well as how you can sign up for it.

What is a legal nurse consultant?

A legal nurse consultant is basically a nurse who is qualified to work as a consultant for medical-related legal cases. Their main job is to provide assistance to lawyers for them to better understand the various terms and jargon used in the medical field. They may also be called upon to interview witnesses regarding various medical facts in their cases, as well as act as expert witnesses themselves in court.

The actual work the legal nurse consultant has to do for each case that he handles is rather tedious. First, there is a lot of research involved, as they have to go through a lot of records to find those relevant to the work at hand. Furthermore, they have to draft these into an easy to grasp report for the lawyer or the court.

For all of that work, the legal nurse consultant can expect to earn around $71,593 annually.

So how do you become one?

One of the most important requirements for becoming a certified legal nurse consultant is to be a registered nurse first. To be eligible to apply for a consultant certification, the nurse must already have five years of experience in the field. Note that both current and former nurses can be eligible as long as they already have the required experience.

From there, you will be required to complete a legal nurse consultant education. In order to be eligible for certification, you have to post around 2000 hours of training. Taking up internships can help you better grasp the work that will be at hand. According to The Center For Legal Studies, there are affordable and flexible courses you cna choose.

Once you have passed the certification exam, then you can start work as an LNC. Do note that, to be successful in this new line of work, you have to regularly maintain your licenses, including taking up additional coursework.
